McComb, Transportation hub in Pike County, Mississippi, United States
McComb is a city in Pike County, southern Mississippi, spreading across roughly twelve square miles. The settlement sits at around four hundred feet elevation and serves as a key junction for rail operations in the region.
The settlement formed in 1872 when railroad maintenance shops moved here from New Orleans, bringing together three existing hamlets into one community. A tornado in 1975 caused heavy damage and claimed nine lives.
The town carries the name of Henry Simpson McComb, a railroad businessman who shaped its founding by merging three communities into one. Visitors see a typical southern layout with low commercial buildings lining wide streets, shaped by the steady rhythm of rail traffic passing through.
The town sits along Interstate 55 and several US highways, making it easy to reach from any direction. Travelers can board Amtrak trains here on the route running between Chicago and New Orleans.
The Pike School of Art hosts an Earth Day festival each spring, while October brings the Summit Street Unity Festival. Both gatherings draw residents from across the area and mark the social calendar of the town.
