Monticello, city in and county seat of Drew County, Arkansas, United States
Monticello is the county seat of Drew County in southeastern Arkansas. The town spans about 10 square miles (26 square kilometers) with around 8,400 residents living among a mix of historic buildings and quiet streets. On the University of Arkansas-Monticello campus, visitors find the Turner Neal Museum of Natural History and the Pomeroy planetarium, while the Drew County Historical Museum displays old photographs and artifacts from the region.
Monticello was founded in 1852 when residents donated over 80 acres of land to establish a new county seat. The first courthouse was built in 1851 on the town square, and over the next ten years the city grew rapidly with churches, schools, and businesses.
The name Monticello comes from Italian and means 'little mountain'. The town has developed as a local center where schools, churches, and public spaces bring the community together and shape daily life.
Lake Monticello offers over 1500 acres of water for fishing and recreation, while Seven Devils Swamp and Cut-Off Creek Wildlife Management Areas are within a short drive for hiking and nature watching. The town has hotels like Hampton Inn and Economy Inn along main roads, plus restaurants such as Betty's for Lunch and LaTerraza to suit different tastes.
The Pomeroy planetarium on the university campus is one of the region's major cultural offerings, allowing viewers to watch shows about stars and planets under a dark sky. The Turner Neal Museum also displays big game animals from around the world, which is uncommon for a city of this size.
