Look See Tree, Lookout tree in Drew County, Arkansas
Look See Tree is a tall tree at the southwest corner of Arkansas Highway 83 and Pleasant Springs Road in Coleman, Arkansas. Arkansas Forestry Commission rangers fitted it with climbing pegs, a platform and a telephone line to a ranger station, using it as a fire lookout around 1930 to 1940. The pegs and platform remain in the tree.
Arkansas Forestry Commission rangers used the tree as a fire lookout from about 1930 to about 1940, roughly ten to fifteen years, while it was the tallest tree in an open area. A fire tower later took over the job, but the climbing pegs and platform stayed in the tree. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 23, 2008.
The name "Look See Tree" comes from its use as a fire lookout: rangers climbed pegs to a platform and used a telephone line to report fires to a ranger station. The pegs and platform were left in the tree after a fire tower took over the job.
The tree stands at the southwest corner of Arkansas Highway 83 and Pleasant Springs Road in Coleman, an open roadside spot reached by car. The climbing pegs and platform remain in the trunk, but they were left in place after a fire tower took over the lookout role, so they are not maintained for climbing.
As of 2006, the Look See Tree was the only remaining lookout tree in Arkansas. Rangers reached its platform by climbing pegs driven into the trunk, and a telephone line linked the tree to a ranger station. The pegs and platform stayed in place after a fire tower took over the work.
