Indianola

Indianola is the county seat of Sunflower County, located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta region. The town spreads across the flat landscape and includes downtown areas, historic neighborhoods, residential streets, and cultural institutions that serve the local population.

The town was founded in the late 19th century as an administrative and trade center for the Delta region. A turning point came in 1891 when Minnie M. Cox became the first Black female postmaster in the nation, a milestone that challenged the norms of her time.

The B.B. King Museum reflects the region's deep connection to blues music, showing how this art form developed here and shaped the lives of local musicians. Visitors can see how blues remains woven into the community's identity and sense of place.

The town is spread out across flat terrain, so having a car is helpful for getting around to different attractions and locations. Key sites like the museum and downtown shops are dispersed throughout the area rather than concentrated in one walkable zone.

In 2003, art students from Gentry High School created the world's longest comic strip, earning a Guinness World Record for the achievement. This project remains a striking example of how local youth channeled creativity into something memorable that brought recognition to their community.
