Big Creek Lake, formed by damming the Big Creek in southwest Alabama
Big Creek Lake is a reservoir in Mobile County that stores about 3,600 acres of water and is surrounded by trees and low hills. The water primarily supplies drinking water for the city of Mobile and is pumped into the city's water system through a nearby pumping station.
The lake was created in the early 1950s after Mobile needed to expand its drinking water sources because existing supplies no longer met demand and were becoming polluted from growing towns. The project was built to ensure a more reliable and clean water supply for the city and industries.
The lake is named J. B. Converse Reservoir after someone who helped develop it. Today it serves as a quiet place where visitors can watch ducks and herons while locals enjoy walking and picnicking along its shores.
The lake is located in a quiet part of the county and is easy to access on foot, with small parks and open spaces along the shore. Visitors should be aware of safety rules and watch for posted signs since the reservoir is strictly managed.
In 2021 and 2022 several invasive species including Giant Salvinia and zebra mussels were discovered, leading to temporary closures and intense monitoring efforts. This threat led to a 2025 decision to close the lake to all motorboats in order to protect the city's drinking water supply.
