Dauphin Island, Barrier island town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States

Dauphin Island is a narrow barrier island located off the coast of Mobile County in the Gulf of Mexico. The island stretches about 14 miles (23 kilometers) along the coastline, connecting sandy shorelines with pine groves and shallow bays.

Spanish explorers reached the island in the early 16th century during expeditions along the Gulf Coast. French colonists settled here in the early 18th century and named the place after the heir to the French throne.

The name Dauphin refers to the French word for heir to the throne, reflecting colonial origins. Local residents and visitors often gather at small seafood shacks where shrimp and crab are served fresh from the Gulf waters.

A bridge about three miles (five kilometers) long connects the island to the mainland and provides access by car. A ferry also operates from the eastern side of Mobile Bay, offering an alternative route for vehicles and passengers.

The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and attracts thousands of migratory birds during spring and fall migration seasons. Birdwatchers can spot rare species traveling along coastal routes between North and South America.
