Battleship Memorial Park

Battleship Memorial Park is a military memorial site in Mobile featuring two main vessels: the USS Alabama battleship and the USS Drum submarine, both designated as National Historic Landmarks. Located on the western shore of Mobile Bay, the grounds also display aircraft, tanks, and artillery pieces representing different eras of military history.

The USS Alabama battleship arrived at its current location in 1964, brought there through efforts funded by Alabama schoolchildren. The USS Drum submarine was built in 1946 and gained recognition for its combat operations in the Pacific during World War II.

The site honors those who served in the military across different branches of the armed forces. Walking through, you encounter planes, tanks, and guns that show the range of military service and sacrifice.

Visitors should be prepared for plenty of walking and climbing stairs within the vessels, as some areas are quite narrow. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be less crowded, making it easier to explore at your own pace.

The USS Drum submarine was moved ashore in 2001 and is among the most decorated submarines in American naval history. Its preservation demonstrates how communities value keeping these historical witnesses available for future generations to experience.
