The 120,000-square-foot museum complex resembles a container ship facing Mobile Bay, featuring 90 interactive exhibits across multiple decks.
The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico commenced operations on September 26, 2015, following five years of construction under Mayor Sam Jones.
The exhibits present regional maritime traditions through displays about shipwrecks, hurricanes, offshore operations, and navigation techniques in the Gulf of Mexico.
Visitors can experience ship navigation through professional-grade simulators that recreate conditions in Mobile Bay, Mobile River, and the Tombigbee River.
The museum contains a field laboratory dedicated to fire ants, which entered the United States through the Port of Mobile via banana boats.
