Santa Rosa Island, Florida

Santa Rosa Island is a long barrier island with wide white sand beaches facing the Gulf of Mexico and a protected sound on the other side. The island stretches for over thirty miles and contains beaches, dunes, and natural areas.

Spanish explorers landed here in 1559 but could not establish a lasting settlement due to harsh conditions. The island later became important for military defense with the construction of a major fort in the 1800s.

The fort at the western end shows the military past through its walls and structures that visitors walk through today. It stands as a reminder of how people used this island for defense long ago.

You can reach the island by toll bridge from Gulf Breeze or use the free summer trolley service from town. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather for spending time on the beaches and exploring the natural areas.

An educational trail with thirty signs teaches visitors about local sea life and how waves and wind shape the sand and dunes. The signs help people understand the natural processes happening right around them as they walk.
