Sauto Theater, Neoclassical theater in Matanzas, Cuba
Sauto Theater is a neoclassical theater building in Matanzas featuring an interior mostly covered with wood paneling. The venue holds 775 seats arranged in a U-shaped configuration across three balcony levels for good sight lines and sound quality.
The building opened in 1863, designed by Italian architect Diego Dell'Aglio and originally named Teatro Esteban after the Civil Governor of Matanzas. The name later became Sauto, reflecting changes in local naming conventions and cultural priorities over time.
The lobby displays marble statues of Greek goddesses, while the main hall ceiling features detailed paintings of classical muses, reflecting the artistic vision built into the original design.
Regular performances happen several times per week, and the space hosts international events including ballet festivals throughout the year. Arrive early for popular shows since the fixed seating capacity fills up quickly.
The auditorium floor can be mechanically raised to transform the space into a ballroom for special events. This feature allows flexible use for different kinds of gatherings beyond theatrical performances.
