Zapata Swamp National Park

The Zapata Swamp National Park covers 4,354 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, grasslands, and coral reefs along the Caribbean coast.

The region transformed from agricultural land to a national park, receiving Ramsar site designation in 2001 and recognition as a Tentative World Heritage Site in 2003.

Nine thousand residents of Spanish descent maintain traditional practices through silviculture, community agriculture, fishing activities, handicrafts, and beekeeping in the surrounding areas.

Visitors can access multiple trails and waterways throughout the park, with temperatures ranging from 20°C in winter months to 30°C during summer season.

The park houses the Cuban crocodile and three bird species found nowhere else: the Zapata wren, Zapata rail, and Zapata sparrow.
