Huánucopampa, Archaeological site in La Unión District, Peru.

Huánucopampa is an archaeological site in the Peruvian highlands comprising thousands of stone structures arranged across multiple sectors. These surround a large central plaza situated at high altitude in a remote mountain setting.

The site was established as an administrative center during the reign of an Inca ruler in the late 15th century. It arose during a period when the empire was expanding its control system across this mountain region.

The Ushnu ceremonial platform features dual feline sculptures and imperial Inca stonework, demonstrating the architectural techniques of the period.

The location demands good preparation for high altitude and variable weather since it sits in a remote mountain setting. Visitors should pace themselves and allow time to adapt to the thin air.

The site contains a large stone Ushnu observatory that was one of the most significant examples of its kind in the region. This structure demonstrates the builders' technical skill in planning and construction at high altitude.
