Our Lady of Exile and St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, Florianópolis

Catedral Metropolitana is a Catholic cathedral in downtown Florianópolis with neoclassical architecture featuring symmetrical proportions, large windows, and a central nave flanked by side corridors. The space feels bright and organized, with a clear layout that guides your eye toward the altar.

The cathedral was founded in 1753 under Governor Jose da Silva Paes and took several decades to complete, replacing an earlier chapel from 1675. Its construction reflects the colonial growth of Florianópolis and the role of religious architecture in the city's development.

The cathedral houses religious artworks, including a cedar wood sculpture called 'Escape to Egypt' made by South Tyrolean artist Demetz Groeden in 1902. These pieces shape the spiritual space and show the artistic care put into decorating the place of worship.

The cathedral is easy to reach on foot, located right in the downtown area and accessible to all visitors. Keep in mind that services happen at different times, and dressing respectfully is appreciated when inside.

The bell system consists of five German bells installed in 1922, forming one of the largest bell collections in Latin America. These bells still shape the city's soundscape with their regular ringing.
