Residential Complex of the University of São Paulo, Student residential complex at University of São Paulo, Brazil.
The Residential Complex of the University of São Paulo is a student housing development within the Butantã campus featuring eight six-story buildings arranged in a rectangular pattern. The structures follow Plattenbau architectural principles and connect directly to campus facilities including sports areas and cultural institutions.
The complex was built in 1963 originally to house athletes attending the Pan American Games. Following the event, it was converted to permanent student housing and has been managed by Coseas USP since then.
The complex reflects modernist design principles that influenced university housing across Brazil during the 1960s. Visitors can see how the layout prioritizes communal spaces and open areas between buildings, promoting interaction among residents.
The facility features communal laundry areas throughout the buildings and provides easy access to nearby campus amenities without additional fees. Visitors should note that access is primarily for residents and may be restricted during certain hours.
The complex received recognition at the 12th São Paulo Modern Art Salon as a representative example of the Plattenbau movement in Brazil. Its internal layout was intentionally modified during Brazil's military period to discourage the formation of organized student groups within residential spaces.
