The Caxiuanã National Forest spans 317,949 hectares across the municipalities of Portel and Melgaço, featuring both terra firme and floodplain forest ecosystems.
Established in 1961, this protected area holds 27 archaeological sites from the Guaycuru people, specifically the Arucará and Aricuru populations.
Twenty-nine families within the forest maintain traditional practices through subsistence agriculture, focusing on cassava flour production, Brazil nut collection, and açaí harvesting.
Access to the forest requires a combination of air travel to Breves followed by boat transport, or alternatively a direct 25-hour boat journey from Belém.
The Ferreira Penna Scientific Station, established in 1993, serves as a research center for international studies on Amazonian ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
