Mangal das Garças, Nature park in Belém, Brazil
Mangal das Garças is a park on the Guamá River banks that combines artificial lakes with cultivated gardens representing different forest types from Pará state. The space includes multiple zones with different vegetation, a natural history museum, a butterfly house, and a tall lighthouse.
The park was created in 2005 on a site originally flooded with water lilies, transforming it into an urban public space for the first time. Its establishment was part of a waterfront revitalization project that aimed to showcase the different forest ecosystems of the Amazon region.
The Navigation Memorial shows how Amazonian waterways were used across generations, displaying old boats and tools from regional daily life.
The park can be walked easily, with clearly marked paths connecting different levels and zones. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water to stay hydrated during midday heat, as shaded areas are limited.
The 47-meter lighthouse is not merely a display but continues to function as an actual navigation aid for ships on the river. The climb leads to two observation decks offering views of the city and the Guamá.
