Feliz Lusitânia, Colonial heritage site in Cidade Velha, Belém, Brazil
Feliz Lusitânia is a colonial complex in Belém's old city with several key buildings including the Forte do Presépio fortress, the Palace of Eleven Windows, and Santo Alexandre Church. The site also contains a public square, exhibition spaces, and the Metropolitan Cathedral that form a restored historic settlement.
The site was founded in 1616 by Portuguese captain Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco to defend the northern coast against Dutch and French incursions. This early fort became the core of a larger colonial settlement that developed over the centuries.
Sacred art displayed here reflects the mixing of Portuguese and indigenous traditions visible in objects and architecture throughout the site. The works show how different cultures lived together in the Amazon region.
The outdoor areas are accessible every day around the clock, while indoor exhibition spaces operate on specific days and times. Plan your visit for when the museum rooms are open to view the collections and artwork on display.
The Palace of Eleven Windows was designed by Italian architect Antonio Landi and displays contemporary art from northern and northeastern Brazil. This building combines historic architecture with modern artistic presentation in an unexpected way.
