Masinga Dam

Masinga Dam is an embankment dam and hydroelectric facility on the Tana River in eastern Kenya. The structure holds back water that flows through turbines to generate electricity for the region.

This facility was built between 1978 and 1981 as part of Kenya's broader plan to develop hydroelectric power. It marked an important step forward in expanding the country's electricity supply.

Local fishing communities work the reservoir's waters as part of their daily routine, while farmers rely on the water for irrigating their fields. These activities shape how people in the area live and support themselves economically.

The facility is managed by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company and is not freely open for public tours. It is best to inquire in advance if you want to visit the area.

The reservoir stores water that also flows downstream to four other hydroelectric plants, making this dam a key part of a larger power system. This interconnection between facilities allows the river to be used more efficiently.
