North Head

North Head is a volcanic formation rising at the eastern edge of Waitemata Harbour, with multiple walking paths leading to its summit. The landscape features volcanic terrain dotted with walkways and structures from its military past.

Military authorities built defensive fortifications and underground tunnels here in the 1880s to protect Auckland from potential naval attacks. These structures were part of a broader defense strategy to guard the harbor entrance.

The mountain is called Maungauika in the Māori language, reflecting its importance to indigenous people who have long connections to this place. Generations cultivated gardens on its lower slopes, showing how the land was woven into their daily life.

Visitors can explore the underground tunnel network with a flashlight while following marked pathways throughout the site. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the terrain is uneven, and it helps to allow plenty of time for a complete visit.

Original gun emplacements and military structures from that era remain visible and intact across the site. These installations offer a rare glimpse into the working defenses that were actually used to guard the harbor.
