Romavilla Winery, Heritage winery in Roma, Queensland, Australia
Romavilla Winery is a heritage wine production facility in Roma, Queensland, consisting of multiple buildings including an office, winery shed, and distillery structure on a property spanning approximately 13 hectares. The layout includes all the infrastructure needed for commercial wine production on a significant scale.
Samuel Symons Bassett founded the vineyard in 1866 and constructed the initial buildings between 1877 and 1878, initiating commercial wine production in the Maranoa region. This establishment made it one of Queensland's earliest wine production sites.
The winery established Queensland's reputation for wine production through numerous national and international competition awards that demonstrated the region's quality and capability.
The winery ceased active production in 2012, and a fire in June 2023 caused significant damage to structures on the property at Northern Road. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited due to the condition of the buildings.
The facility produced Madeira wine using Riesling and Syrian grape varieties sourced from Persia, demonstrating early cultivation of international grape types in Queensland. This distinctive approach to grape selection set it apart from other wineries of that period.
