Double H High Adventure Base, Youth adventure base in Plains of San Agustin, New Mexico
Double H High Adventure Base is an outdoor education camp located in the remote wilderness of New Mexico's Plains of San Agustin at approximately 7,000 feet elevation. The site spans open ponderosa and pinon forests mixed with juniper vegetation and rocky canyons that form the natural landscape for wilderness programs.
The base operated from 2004 to 2009 as a satellite program connected to Philmont Scout Ranch through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. This period marked its active years as an outdoor education facility in New Mexico's remote landscape.
Participants learned wilderness navigation skills using maps, compasses, and GPS devices while developing leadership abilities through guided outdoor experiences.
The camp provided gear, supplies, and wilderness guides who accompanied groups on multi-day treks through the backcountry. Participants needed to be prepared for navigating rough terrain without established trails or reliable water sources.
The property had no marked trails and minimal natural water sources, requiring participants to navigate using maps and compasses through open terrain. These raw conditions were intentional, designed to teach genuine wilderness skills in southwestern desert and forest environments.
