Paipa

Paipa is a town in the Eastern Cordillera at 2,525 meters elevation with thermal springs and Lake Sochagota as its main features. The settlement spreads around these water bodies and includes a monument dedicated to a major independence battle.

The town gained prominence through the Battle of Pantano de Vargas in 1819, when independence forces defeated Spanish colonial troops. This moment turned the course of Colombia's fight for independence.

The Festival of Ruana and Pañolón displays traditional garments worn by locals at celebrations and market days. This event connects local craftsmanship with music competitions that keep the community's musical heritage alive.

The town is accessible from major cities like Bogotá and Bucaramanga by regular buses, often with a connection through Tunja or Duitama. Visitors should allow time to adjust to the high altitude before engaging in strenuous activities.

A power plant harnesses the heat from thermal sources to generate electricity, showing how the region's natural energy serves economic needs. This combination of energy production and recreation is rarely found together.
