Located in deep East Texas, Carthage covers 10.5 square miles of land with streets arranged around a central courthouse district at 95 meters elevation.

Jonathan Anderson donated 100 acres to establish Carthage in 1848, which grew substantially after the 1888 arrival of railroad transportation and telegraph lines.

The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and Tex Ritter Museum preserve the musical heritage of Texas artists through exhibits and annual recognition ceremonies.

The Carthage Independent School District operates five campuses serving over 3,000 students, while Panola College provides associate degrees and technical certifications.

The discovery of gas fields near Carthage during the Great Depression transformed the agricultural town into an energy industry center with rapid population growth.
