Fairhope, Arts colony on Mobile Bay in Baldwin County, United States.
Fairhope is a city in Baldwin County along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Alabama. Streets in the center run downhill toward the water, passing shops and eateries before reaching a public pier.
A group followed the ideas of economist Henry George and founded a settlement here in 1894 with communal land ownership. The model continues today across parts of the original acreage.
The name comes from the founders' hope for fair conditions in their experimental community. Many homes near the waterfront display front porches and gardens where neighbors often gather for conversation.
Walking paths along the waterfront work well in the afternoon when the light softens over the bay. Parking is available near the center and at the end of the main road leading to the pier.
The original tax system on land continues through a corporation that manages leases instead of selling property. This form of administration covers much of the original settlement area.
