Econfina River State Park, Nature reserve and coastal park in Florida, United States.
Econfina River State Park is a nature reserve covering thousands of acres of forests, wetlands, and coastal areas along Florida's northern Gulf Coast. The terrain features waterways that transition from freshwater to saltwater environments as they approach the ocean.
Before European settlement, indigenous populations relied on the river and coastal areas for fishing and hunting. Limestone deposits in the region provided material for making tools and other essential items.
The park serves as a gathering point for paddlers following the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, reflecting its role as a water-based destination. Visitors experience how local communities depend on these waterways for recreation and connection to the natural world.
The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with a modest entrance fee collected on an honor system at the gate. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear for wet and uneven terrain and prepare for warm, humid conditions.
The Blackwater Econfina River flows through dense forest with a thick canopy before opening into salt marshes and reaching the Gulf of Mexico. This dramatic transition from shaded waterway to open coastal landscape happens entirely within the park.
