Its 2,000 hectares hold pine flatwoods, oak and palm forests, and broad salt marsh dotted with pine islands. A wooden boardwalk with yellow posts and grey railings crosses a narrow waterway from a gravel clearing to a tree-lined far bank.

Before European settlement, indigenous populations relied on the river and coastal areas for fishing and hunting. Limestone deposits in the region provided material for making tools and other essential items.
