Dunedin, Coastal city in Pinellas County, US
Dunedin is a town on the Gulf coast of Florida that runs along several miles of waterfront and offers access to nearby islands. Downtown centers around Main Street with shops, restaurants and a brewery scene, while residential neighborhoods fan out to the east.
The settlement was founded in 1852 under the name Jonesboro and later received its current name when Scottish settlers opened the first post office in the 1870s. During the 1940s a factory opened here that built amphibious military vehicles throughout World War II.
The name comes from Gaelic and means Edinburgh, reflecting the Scottish roots of its founders. Visitors can still see this connection today in street names and architectural details on some older buildings.
Most attractions sit downtown or along the waterfront, so a car helps for longer stays. A ferry connects Honeymoon Island with Caladesi Island and runs regularly when weather permits.
A Food Machinery Corporation plant produced heavy amphibious vehicles during the war that saw action in Pacific landings. Today only a few traces remain of this industrial past in the waterfront town.
