Tarpon Springs, Coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida, US
Tarpon Springs is a coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico and the Anclote River. The waterfront district shows traditional sponge diving boats, white Mediterranean-style buildings, and a pier overlooking shallow coastal waters.
Greek divers arrived from the Aegean in the early years of the 20th century, bringing sponge harvesting techniques that transformed the coastal village. Saint Nicholas Church was built in 1943 and serves as the religious center for the Orthodox community.
Greek heritage appears in domed churches, bakeries with pastries, and seafood taverns along the historic waterfront district. Many shops sell natural sponges and imported goods from the Aegean.
The area around Dodecanese Boulevard offers parking and access to restaurants, shops, and a short walk to the riverfront. The path along the water passes boats and allows views of divers working at the docks.
Some divers still use copper helmets and heavy suits like those from the early 20th century. The sponge boats go out for several days at a time and return with fresh sponges that are then cleaned at the docks.
