Paynes Creek Historic State Park, Historic state park in Hardee County, United States
Paynes Creek Historic State Park is a 410-acre preserve that protects the remains of Fort Chokonikla situated above the north bank of the creek and river. The site features trails, earthworks, and structures spread across woodland terrain between two waterways.
Fort Chokonikla was founded in 1849 following an attack on a trading post, establishing the first of many military outposts in South Central Florida. Its construction marked a turning point in the region's military presence.
The visitor center exhibits artifacts and stories about how Seminole Indians and early settlers lived in this region. Walking through displays helps visitors understand the lives of people who inhabited this place.
The park offers four miles of walking trails, including an accessible route to Fort Chokonikla and a longer trail with information markers throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as some paths are unpaved and the terrain can be uneven.
A swinging footbridge links different sections of the historical site across the waterways. The surrounding rivers also allow visitors to canoe and fish, adding an outdoor activity dimension to the visit.
