The city was founded in 1915 and officially incorporated nine years later in 1924. During the 1920s, prominent figures such as silent film star Thomas Meighan and golfer Gene Sarazen moved here during the Florida land boom.
The downtown area along the Cotee River hosts concerts and art events in smaller halls that locals visit regularly. Many of the buildings in this area date from the early 20th century and still show their original architecture.
Visitors driving through the area reach the downtown area via US Highway 19, which runs through the entire city. The waterfront promenade along the Cotee River offers space for walking and outdoor seating.
County administration is split between two locations, with this place handling the western part while Dade City manages the eastern half. This dual system allows residents from different parts of the county shorter travel to government services.
