Clermont, City in Lake County, Florida, United States
Clermont is a city in Lake County, Florida, covering roughly 11.5 square miles of rolling terrain. The land rises to about 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level, creating a hilly landscape uncommon in the state.
The city was founded in 1884 when A.F. Wrotnowski of the Clermont Improvement Company named it after his birthplace in France. The founding occurred as part of a land development initiative to attract new settlers to central Florida.
A preserved district honors early settler families and the pioneers who shaped the community. The Townsend House represents the first African-American residents who made their home here.
City services include digital options for payments and access to public documents through the municipal website. Regular council sessions are open to residents interested in local government matters.
The northern section of the Lake Wales Ridge runs through the area, producing elevations that stand out across the flat Florida peninsula. This geological formation is one of the few ridge systems in the state.
