Leesburg, City center in Lake County, Florida, United States.
Leesburg is a city in Lake County at the center of Florida, surrounded by several lakes and crossed by residential neighborhoods and commercial streets. Downtown lines up low brick buildings along Main Street, while single-family homes with lawns spread out beyond the center.
The settlement began in 1857 as a trading point between Orlando and Ocala and became known after the Civil War for its citrus plantations. In the 20th century the town grew thanks to the highway and attracted retirees and families escaping the coastal bustle.
The town takes its name from. Evander Lee, an early settler whose family shaped the development of the community. On weekends locals gather along Waterfront Way by Lake Harris, where anglers and boaters use the lakefront promenade.
The temperature stays warm year-round so light clothing works, but summer afternoons are often humid with brief thunderstorms. Most facilities sit along wide streets and require a car, as sidewalks are continuous only in the town center.
The annual Mardi Gras parade in late October combines carnival with Halloween and brings costumed crowds and floats through downtown. Several public boat ramps around the town allow access to the many lakes without entry fees or reservations.
