Lee School
Lee School is a brick schoolhouse in Leesburg, Florida, comprising two main sections built in 1915 and 1923 with two stories each. The buildings feature wide eaves and simple decorative elements like pilasters framing the doors and windows, with large windows designed to provide ample natural light.
The school opened in 1915 to serve students from first through twelfth grade in a newly constructed building after the previous facility was deemed inadequate. A second building was added in 1923 as the district expanded to accommodate increasing enrollment.
The school served as a gathering place for the community and a space where people connected beyond regular classes. It held significance as a venue for local events and remained a touchstone in residents' memories of their town's development.
The school is located on North Lee Street in the heart of Leesburg, making it accessible from the town center. Visitors should note that the building is no longer in active use and access may be limited or restricted.
During World War II, the building served as a distribution point for ration books and as childcare for working mothers during the day. Later, it became the Lee Adult Education Center, providing adults the opportunity to complete high school diplomas.
