Florida State Prison, State prison in Bradford County, United States
Florida State Prison is a state correctional facility in Bradford County in northern Florida. The compound consists of several buildings with reinforced walls and contains cells with different security levels for around fifteen hundred inmates.
The facility opened in 1961 initially as Florida State Prison-East Unit and grew over the following years until completion in 1968. Construction came as a response to rising inmate numbers in state correctional facilities during the postwar period.
Only a few people enter the grounds each day beyond staff and approved visitors with prior clearance. Strict controls and the fully fenced compound create the impression of an enclosed place separate from life in the surrounding area.
Visits require prior registration and presentation of valid identification at the entrance. Bags and personal items undergo inspection and certain articles are not permitted inside the compound.
Inside the compound sits a chamber where executions by injection have taken place since 2000. The facility also houses a wing specifically for death row inmates with around 335 cells.
