Citrus County, County in Florida, United States
Citrus County extends across 773 square miles of Florida's central western coast, featuring a combination of land mass and water areas at 21 meters elevation.
The county, established in 1887 from portions of Hernando County, received its name from the numerous citrus groves that dominated the local agriculture during that period.
The first newspaper published in the region, named Phosphate Times, reflected the strong connection between the local community and the phosphate mining industry.
The Citrus County Library System, formed in 1987, maintains multiple branches throughout the region, providing residents with comprehensive access to reading materials and services.
The decline of citrus production after the winter freeze of 1894-1895 left only one major plantation standing, known as Bellamy Grove.
