Hollywood, Beachfront city in Broward County, Florida, US
Hollywood is a coastal city in Broward County in southern Florida. The development stretches from the Atlantic Ocean westward toward the Everglades, cut through by canals connecting to the Intracoastal Waterway.
Joseph Young founded the city in 1921 as a planned settlement with artificial lakes and golf courses. The construction drew thousands of workers until a hurricane in 1926 interrupted the growth.
The Broadwalk project transformed the beachfront promenade into a palm-lined pedestrian zone where locals jog and cyclists commute daily. On weekdays, older residents appear for morning walks, while weekends bring families with children to the public green spaces.
Most visits focus on the beach area and the adjacent shops. Early morning hours work better for quieter walks before afternoon crowds arrive.
At night, the early electric streetlights confused ships at sea, which thought Miami was on fire. The mistake came from the brightness of the new public lighting over what was then a barely developed stretch of coast.
