Steinhatchee Falls, Natural waterfall in Taylor County, Florida.
Description
Steinhatchee Falls is a waterfall in Taylor County where the river cascades over limestone ledges, forming the widest waterfall expanse in Florida. The water drops gradually across a broad area rather than in a single plunge.
History
The area around this waterfall contains visible wagon ruts from the Old Bellamy Road, a pioneer route through Florida during the 1800s. These traces remain carved into the landscape from heavy use centuries ago.
Culture
The Steinhatchee Falls area demonstrates the geological evolution of Florida's landscape through its limestone formations and river system patterns.
Practical
The site is accessed via a dirt road near SR 51, a couple miles south of US 19, with restrooms and a kayak launch available on site. The road can be rough and may be difficult after heavy rain.
Did you know?
The Steinhatchee River flows underground and resurfaces about half a mile south at Steinhatchee Rise, making it an unusual natural phenomenon in the state. This underground journey happens beneath the limestone bedrock that visitors see at the falls.
