Southwest Ranches, Horse ranching community in Broward County, United States.
Southwest Ranches is a town in Broward County, Florida, composed of three separate sections near the Everglades. The community features large residential lots without streetlights or sidewalks, maintaining a rural character in the midst of South Florida's urban development.
The area changed from Tequesta territory to an incorporated town in 2000, becoming Broward County's 30th municipality. This incorporation prevented annexation by neighboring Pembroke Pines and secured local self-governance for residents.
The community maintains strong equestrian traditions through extensive multi-use trails that connect properties and enable residents to travel on horseback throughout the town.
Local zoning laws require minimum lot sizes of about 1 acre (0.4 hectares) for residential properties, ensuring lower density housing than surrounding urban areas. The town features a trail network that runs through different properties and offers a particular approach to the landscape.
The town consists of three non-contiguous sections, with the two largest parts separated by about 1,455 feet (445 meters) of other jurisdiction. This arrangement means visitors may cross municipal boundaries several times while traveling through the area without necessarily noticing.
