Plantation, Suburban city in Broward County, United States.
Plantation is a city in Broward County, located about ten miles west of Fort Lauderdale. The area consists of residential subdivisions with wide streets, shopping centers, and public parks connected by tree-lined pathways.
Frederick C. Peters acquired more than ten thousand acres in 1931 for farming purposes, setting the foundation for regional development. The city was officially incorporated in 1953, with Ellsworth D. Gage serving as its first mayor.
Weekly farmers markets draw neighbors together to shop for local produce and homegrown vegetables. Community garden plots teach children and adults how to work with soil and grow their own food.
The city offers public facilities and programs accessible through the local government system. Commission meetings take place regularly for residents to discuss community concerns and municipal projects.
The name comes from the Everglades Plantation Company, which tried to establish rice farming in the area before the city was founded. These agricultural experiments proved unsuccessful on the region's wet soils.
