Hotel Breakwater is a hotel building in Miami Beach, US, set along Ocean Drive. Its three-story facade combines Art Deco and Streamline Moderne details, with smooth stucco walls, a flat roof, and a symmetrical front porch of terrazzo and fluted posts.
Built in 1939, the hotel was designed by architect Anton Skislewicz in a blend of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. It later became part of the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property.
The neon sign above the central entrance spells out the hotel name and lights the street after dark. Passersby often linger on the porch, which gives the whole facade the feel of a stage set for the beachside neighborhood.
Walking around the block is easy because the sidewalk stays flat and the facade faces the street directly. Early morning or late evening gives a clearer view of the front details, when foot traffic is lighter.
The pipe railings along the roof line are easy to miss from a distance but were part of the original look. They match the nautical feel that many Streamline Moderne buildings borrowed from ships.
