Disney Wilderness Preserve is a nature conservation area at the northern edge of the Florida Everglades, covering wetlands, pine forests, and cypress swamps. Three marked trails wind through the different habitats, each offering a different view of the terrain and the wildlife that lives there.
The land was a cattle ranch before The Nature Conservancy bought it in 1991 and started restoring it to its natural state. Funding from Disney helped turn the property into a place formally dedicated to wildlife protection.
The learning center runs programs that show how Florida's native ecosystems work and what people can do to support them at home. These programs draw school groups and families looking to spend time outdoors in a way that goes beyond a typical park visit.
The trails can be muddy and open sections offer little shade, so sturdy shoes and enough water are worth having before you start. Going early in the day is a good idea, as temperatures rise quickly and wildlife tends to be more active in the morning hours.
The preserve uses controlled burns on a regular basis to restore the natural fire cycle that once shaped this landscape. Without these fires, longleaf pine forests would slowly give way to other plant species that crowd them out over time.
