The school was founded in 1962 to provide education to African American students in northeast Gadsden County, serving as one of the first of its kind in the area. Following Brown v. Board of Education, it became integrated in 1970 and continued serving the community for another 34 years before closing in 2004.
The school was a gathering place for Havana's African American community and the surrounding area for decades. Beyond classrooms, it hosted basketball games, school plays, and community events that brought people together regularly.
The site is located in Havana, a small town in Gadsden County, Florida, and is no longer in operation as a school. Since it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, visitors can view the historic building and explore the grounds at their convenience.
The school fielded a successful basketball team called the Gladiators that won three state championships in 1971, 1974, and 1978. These athletic achievements remain part of local memory and are recalled by many former students and residents.
