Waddells Mill Pond Site, Archaeological site in Jackson County, Florida, US
Waddells Mill Pond Site is an archaeological place with two mounds and remains of a circular fortification near a spring-fed pond in northwest Marianna. The location shows evidence of settlements from prehistoric times built around this water source.
The place was inhabited during the late prehistoric period before Spanish arrival in 1674. Archaeologists in the 1960s and 1970s discovered mound and village complexes that revealed the settlement's organization.
The site shows where Native American groups made their homes during the Fort Walton period in the upper Chipola River region. The remains reveal how these communities organized their daily lives in this landscape.
The lower section is managed by the Northwest Florida Water Management District and includes the dam and stream areas. Wear proper shoes when exploring, as the ground is overgrown and wet in places.
Research shows that people lived in caves alongside the mounded villages, suggesting diverse living patterns. This mix of different settlement styles gives clues about how these early communities adapted to their environment.
