Old Hamilton County Jail, Gefängnis in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Old Hamilton County Jail is a prison building from 1893 in Jasper, Florida, built in Romanesque Revival style with rounded windows and thick walls made of brick and steel. The two-story structure housed the sheriff and his family on the first floor, with inmates kept upstairs in cells designed to prevent escape.
The jail opened in 1893 and served as Hamilton County's only jail for more than 90 years before ceasing its original function. In 1983 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and has since operated as the Hamilton County Historical Museum.
The jail reflects how small Florida communities were organized in the late 1800s, with the sheriff and his family living on the lower floor and inmates above. This arrangement shows the daily reality where law enforcement lived close to their work and watched over both family and prisoners.
The building is located downtown in Jasper at 501 Northeast 1st Avenue and is open for public visits as the historical museum. Visitors should check ahead as the building has recently experienced storm damage and may be temporarily closed for restoration work.
Every October the old jail transforms into a Haunted Jail event where locals and visitors gather to experience spooky stories and decorations. This annual gathering brings the historic building to life with modern community activities that blend the past with present-day enjoyment.
