Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, National wildlife refuge in Barbour and Russell counties, Alabama.
Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area spanning roughly 11,000 acres along the Alabama-Georgia border at Walter F. George Lake. The land includes extensive water bodies, wetlands, and forests that create a varied landscape.
The refuge was established in 1964 to protect migrating birds and wintering waterfowl through a partnership between local communities and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This collaboration formed the basis for its current conservation role.
The refuge serves as a gathering place for hunting, fishing, bird watching, and photography, with trails and water routes offering ways to explore. Visitors come to experience wildlife and connect with the natural surroundings.
The refuge is located roughly 10 miles north of Eufaula and can be reached via US Route 431 North and Alabama Route 165. Staff are available on weekdays to answer questions about access and activities.
The area preserves rare remnant longleaf pine stands from a historical pine and wiregrass ecosystem that has nearly disappeared elsewhere. These ancient forests provide habitat for hundreds of bird species and numerous mammals.
