Ocilla

Ocilla serves as the county seat of Irwin County in southern Georgia and sits on flat terrain typical of the region. The town functions as a local administrative and commercial hub for the surrounding rural areas.

The settlement started in 1880 and became an incorporated town in 1902, after which it rapidly grew as a railroad hub. Early in the 1900s, fourteen passenger trains ran through daily, establishing it as a major transportation point.

The Sweet Potato Festival draws people together each year with parades, music performances, and local food centered on sweet potatoes. This celebration shows how deeply the agricultural tradition shapes the community's sense of identity.

When exploring the town, the main facilities and services are clustered in and around the downtown area. Visitors should expect to walk to nearby spots, but a car helps for getting to more distant locations.

The Dismuke and Willis Sanitarium was the first hospital to open in the town and served patients in the early 1900s. The building still stands today and is now used as a private residence while keeping its original architectural structure.
