Lake Harding, reservoir on the Chattahoochee River
Lake Harding is a large reservoir on the Chattahoochee River formed by a dam at the border between Georgia and Alabama. The water spreads across more than 5,800 acres with scattered islands and reaches depths over 100 feet near the dam.
The reservoir was built in 1926 by the Columbus Power Company to generate electricity for local communities. In 1930, Georgia Power purchased the dam and lake, transforming it from a utility facility into a major recreation and leisure destination for the region.
The lake's name reflects its role as a power source and has shaped community identity over generations. Today, the shoreline homes and daily use by fishermen and boaters show how the reservoir has become central to local life and weekend traditions.
The lake offers multiple boat ramps and marinas along the shore for easy water access. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, so visitors should check conditions before boating, fishing, or swimming activities.
The lake serves as a training site for Auburn University's rowing team, with athletes practicing at dawn and bringing movement to the quiet waters. This sports tradition adds an unexpected lively energy to this otherwise peaceful natural setting.
