John Tanner State Park, State park in Carroll County, Georgia, US
John Tanner State Park is a 138-acre outdoor recreation area with two lakes and a large sandy beach serving as its main features. The property includes hiking trails, boat launch areas, fishing spots, and a miniature golf course spread throughout the grounds.
The property operated as a private recreation area called Tanner's Beach from 1954 until the early 1970s, when local businessman John Tanner ran the site. County management took over the property in 2010, transforming it into today's state park.
The park serves as a gathering place for the community throughout the year, drawing families and friends to its lakes and beach areas. Local traditions revolve around outdoor recreation and seasonal celebrations that connect visitors to the land.
The park terrain is mostly flat and easy to navigate, with ample parking available for day visitors. Arrive early on weekends and sunny days to secure good spots near the beach and lake areas, as popular sections fill quickly.
The park features a notably large sandy beach area compared to other Georgia state parks, creating an unexpected inland beach experience. Few visitors realize this park offers such an extensive waterfront beach, making it a surprising find for those seeking sandy shores without traveling to the coast.
