John Tanner State Park is a 138-acre outdoor recreation area with two lakes and a large sandy beach serving as its main features. The property includes hiking trails, boat launch areas, fishing spots, and a miniature golf course spread throughout the grounds.
John Tanner, a local businessman, ran the site as Tanner's Beach from 1954 to 1971. Carroll County took over management in 2010 and purchased the park in 2013, after which it became John Tanner Park.
The park's name honours John Tanner, the local businessman who ran it as Tanner's Beach from 1954 to 1971. Carroll County hosts three annual events there: the Junior Sportsman Bonanza in March, Halloween Heyday in October and A Very Carroll Christmas in December.
The park terrain is mostly flat and easy to navigate, with ample parking available for day visitors. Arrive early on weekends and sunny days to secure good spots near the beach and lake areas, as popular sections fill quickly.
