Pete Mathews Coliseum, Indoor sports arena in Jacksonville, United States.
Pete Mathews Coliseum is an indoor sports arena on the campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, with seating for around 3,500 people. Below the main court level, the building contains storage space and instructional areas used by the university's health and physical education programs.
The arena opened in 1974, when Jacksonville State University moved its athletic program out of Stephenson Hall and into this newly built facility. The move gave the university a dedicated space designed from the ground up for sports and physical education.
The arena hosts the annual Calhoun County High School Basketball Tournament, where teams from across the region compete in front of local crowds. This event draws families and fans from nearby towns and has become a regular part of the sporting calendar in this part of Alabama.
The coliseum sits directly on the Jacksonville State University campus and can be reached on foot from most parts of the grounds. Visitors attending events are better off arriving a little early to find parking nearby and get their bearings before things start.
A tornado in March 2018 tore into the roof of the building and forced temporary changes to how the facility was used. When repairs were carried out, the work also brought upgrades to the structure designed to make it more resistant to future storm damage.
