Clarkston, Refugee resettlement city in DeKalb County, United States.
Clarkston is a municipality in DeKalb County, Georgia, sitting at roughly 311 meters elevation and covering about 2.8 square kilometers (1.1 square miles). The built environment mixes modest residential streets with small commercial strips where international shops and grocery stores sit side by side.
The municipality received its official incorporation in 1882 from the Georgia General Assembly after the railroad line had been built through the area. In the late 1990s the town began receiving newcomers from conflict zones worldwide, which fundamentally changed its social composition.
The name honors W. W. Clark, a railroad administrator from the 19th century whose connection to the rail line shaped the early settlement. Today this history remains visible in the street layout, which runs parallel to the old railway corridor and traces the original town grid.
MARTA buses run regularly along US Highway 78 and connect to the Blue Line rail system. Most shops and facilities lie within walking distance of the center, though some streets lack continuous sidewalks.
More than 50 different languages are spoken in the streets and shops, creating an unusually international daily scene. Some grocery stores stock ingredients from four continents on the same shelves, making cooking traditions from different parts of the world accessible.
