Decatur Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Decatur, US
Decatur Cemetery is a large burial ground with thousands of graves marked by granite monuments and iron fencing. Walking paths wind through forested areas and along a small creek that flows across the property.
The cemetery was founded in 1826 and is the oldest public burial ground in the Atlanta area. It predates the founding of Decatur itself by several years.
The cemetery is home to many notable people, including war veterans and founders of local institutions, whose names appear on plaques and monuments throughout the grounds. Visitors walking the paths encounter these historically significant graves and can learn about the people behind them.
The cemetery is open daily from sunrise to sunset for visitors. An office on Bell Street answers questions and provides information during weekday hours.
A restored wooden well house from 1881 now serves as a pavilion and stands as one of the few structures from that era still present. A pond on the grounds attracts various bird species and waterfowl throughout the year.
